What VHF antenna should I use?
-
Selection of the VHF antenna is critical to achieving the optimum receive and transmit range. We would recommend choosing an antenna that is tuned to cover the AIS channels at 162MHz.
VHF radios operate at the other end of the marine band (156MHz), so for AIS as well via a splitter you will need to check that it performs across both frequency ranges.
Siting of an antenna is crucial as even a well suited antenna may not radiate a good signal if installed in a poor location. Put simply, keep the antenna upright, clear of anything that could touch it (rigging/other antennas etc), keep a reasonable distance from any other devices/antenna arrays like Radar/HF/VHF radio that may be operating at high power and also keep clear of any other metallic obstructions.

What do the LEDs indicate?
-
The indicators provide the following functions:
• Green (Power) – this indicator is illuminated whilst the unit is powered
• Yellow (TX AIS) – this indicator flashes to indicate AIS transmissions
• Yellow (TX VHF) – this indicator flashes to indicate VHF radio transmissions
Note that both the TX AIS and TX VHF LEDs may illuminate when the AIS antenna splitter is used with some brands of VHF radio at the high output power (25W) setting. This is normal behavior and does not indicate a fault.
FAQ
S100 / S300 frequently asked questions
-
What happens if the power supply to the S100/S300 splitter fails or is turned off?
-
In normal operation, the S100/S300 splitter requires a 12 -24V power supply in order to be able to switch the antenna between being used for AIS and VHF voice communications.
When power supply to the splitter fails or it’s turned off, then it “defaults” to maintaining VHF voice communications.
-
Do I need any additional equipment when installing in a metal-hulled vessel?
-
When installing the S100/S300 on a metal-hulled vessel we would recommend using an isolated DC-DC converter to power the VHF radio / AIS transceiver / splitter to prevent electrolysis occurring.
This applies to most metal-hulled vessels, but aluminium vessels are particularly sensitive to electrolysis.
